Episode 113 - Holiday Hijinx 2022

Episode 113 note:

This one had an…odd energy.  It’s the only way I can describe it.  It’s the holidays, so I guess we are all in a weird mood.  Give it a listen and let me know if it is just me.

Also odd because in that we only feature audio from one of the bands we discuss (Specifically “Hide” by Secret Shame).  Both the OSEES and Sharon Van Etten are excellent, but neither let themselves to concise audio clipping.

For those wondering, my CPAP did not kill me, although it appears to have crossed the rainbow bridge

Episode 106 - Remote

Episode 106 Notes:

Just as we were about to record our next podcast, Jaime got Covid and we had to switch to a remote.  Thus, the audio is a little icky because I had some issues setting up the remote.

Songs featured in Episode 106:

“Searching for You” - Weird Nightmare

“Reality” – Claude

“Big Time” – Angel Olson

We also touch on Gwar, Egg Drop Soup, and Maya Hawke

Episode 105 - Concrete Star (Attempt 2)

The current podcast is having issues posting on certain platforms. Apologies if you are getting spammed by this

Episode 105 Notes:

Sometimes life gets in the way and you are a month late posting the podcast.  And then you realize that your original notes were deleted.

It’s honestly a shame because I feel like this was one of the better ones.  I can barely remember recording this, however, and may just be thinking of an especially tasty snack.

As memory serves, we get into a discussion regarding the (non) existence of buttholes and the band “Concrete Blonde”.  Coincidentally, the day we actually recorded (May 15) was the 32nd anniversary of that album.

Trippy

We also had a topic (Most disturbing thing in a movie), and get into the usual nonsense (Spoiler:  The Pentaverate is NOT GOOD)

Anyway, we will probably be back with a “Main feed” podcast in August, and I will throw a few things out there as well.

Songs featured in Episode 105:

“Commander In Chief” – Crisis Man

“West Virginia” – The Builders and the Butchers

“The Reckoning” – Cave in

“The Jacket” - Widowspeak

Episode 105 - Concrete Star

This didn’t seem to post the last time. Let’s try again….

“The Jacket” - Widowspeak

Episode 104 - Dry Arm

Episode 104 Notes:

Lou makes a dark revelation about his house plants, and Jaime talks about seeing 7 seconds, Solglo, and Negative Approach.

Something that comes up in the conversation is the very limited East Coast Garbage tour this year.  By way of correction, they are touring with “Tears for Fears”.

“Bleached Bones” - Convert

“Vanity Spawned by Fear” – Ceremony

“Strung Out” and “Layla” – Stiff Richards

Wet Leg is also reviewed, but not featured (because they are everywhere)

Episode 102 - Picture the Scene

Episode 102 Notes:

 Picture the scene…

Among other things, we get into the topic (first horror movie) and a little too deep into D.E.B.S. nostalgia.

Songs featured in Episode 102

“Argument” – Robots in Disguise

“Life is a Voyage” – NOBRO

“In April” – ANXIOUS

“Another Go Around” and “Masquerade” – Beach House

“u_u2” – Black Dresses

Note:  it’s pretty hard to capture Black Dresses in a 30 second blip.  Do yourself a favor and check them out at blackdresses.bandcamp.com

Episode 100 - Mew Years Eve 2021

Episode 100 Notes:

As always, the holiday season brings the obligatory “Best of” lists. Podcast. We also hit on a saucy surprise or two, a review of popular literature, and three dead ladies.

“Flower Moon” – Converge and Chelsea Wolfe

“Russian Winter: – Tamar Aphek

“Assumption” – Gel

“Perfect” -Mannequin Pussy

“Down the Street” – La Luz

“Big Star” - Surfbort

Retrosode - Holiday Hijinx

On this most festive of occasions, we revisit our very second podcast (cuz it’s seasonal).  We talk about Peaches, Super Uison, Iron Maiden, Sia, and Peaches.  Then…a brief foray into Christmas Music!

Songs featured in Eppy 2:

“Rub” - Peaches

“Photorealism” – Super Unison

“Empire of the Clouds” - Iron Maiden

“Christmas Wrapping” – The Waitresses

“Santa Claus” – Thee Headcoatees

Episode 99.5 - Redo

Episode 99.5 Notes

One might say numbering an episode as a fraction is a way of stalling out our 100th episode.  Others may say that Episode 100 passed us several months ago.  One thing is for sure, this podcast signifies the first time we actually had to junk and re-record an episode.   Short version is that we recorded an episode using new equipment and audio quality was so muddled that we had to scrap it.  Either that, or Jaime is a ghost.  Anyway, we have a do-over and here it is!

Songs featured in Episode 99.5

“Death (XIII)” and “Hellscape” – Julia Shapiro

“Big Disappointment” – Militarie Gun

“The Pines” – La Luz

“Down the Street” – La Luz and Adrian Younge

“Big Star” and “Youth Group Therapy” - Surfbort

Extrasode 2 - The Math of Swellness

Extrasode 2 – The Math of Swellness

Who doesn’t like a review of an album that came out three months ago by two white men that is twice the length of the actual album?

This is a longform review of “Path of Wellness”.  Somewhere in there we explore the post framework of post album branding, a tangent on Tarantino, and Oliver Sacks theory of Fabi Reyna (whom I am also a fan of).

A little background:  We recorded this podcast in July.  This was during that magic period in which both the computer and the microphone were dying (spoilers).  The audio is a bit rough sounding, even after I cleaned it up.  Most notably, I had to cut most of a section where we talk about Sleater-Kinney’s
Post “The Woods” career.  I bring this up because it comes off as a lot more dismissive of those efforts.  I don’t want to snooze on this, because both Carrie and Corin produced some amazing music in those years (The Spells, Wild Flag, and the Corin Tucker Band).

Two more interesting notes:

1.       I seem to be a bit down on this album.  I’m not.  I love this album and still have it in heavy rotation.  My favorite song (which I neglect to mention) is “Favorite Neighbor”

2.      It’s interesting that I think of something sounding like “Fleetwood Mac” as a good thing, while my brother does not

Songs Featured in Extrasode 2:

“Price Tag”, “Path of Wellness”, “Favorite Neighbor” and “No Knives” – Sleater-Kinney

“Ditched You” – Mommy Long Legs

Excerpt at ~ 13 minutes is from “Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl” by Carrie Brownstein

Episode 98 - The Lost(ish) Episode

Arguably our LEAST TOPICAL episode to date, Episode 98 was recorded in early June, then fell victim to reshuffling and “life” (at one point optimistically speculating a release date of July 21).  This one contains such exciting things as a lesson in Norse Mythology, the continuation of the house hunting saga (which we all know has been resolved; I am posting this from my NEW HOUSE) and Jaime self- diagnosing ailments.

By way of updates:

Jaime went to a bunch of Birthday Parties

Loki was topical in June

I bought a house and moved on the day of the hurricane Ida

….and the cat died.

All of which will be illuminated in Episodes 99 and 100

 Songs featured in Episode 98:

Songs featured in Episode 98:

“Amphetamine Delight” – Catbite

“Shanghai” and “Butterfly 3000” – King Gizzard

“The Creeps” and “Godhead” - Garbage

“Cha Cha D’more” – Dean Martin

Episode 97 - The Shape of Lunch

Episode 97 Notes:

This was (A) supposed to come out at the beginning of July and (B) actually 98.  We had some artists (Movie Club, The Van Dammes) we wanted to bring foreword a bit sooner rather than later, but a combination of technical issues and “life” derailed us.  Anyway, we also touch on Football (the European Kind), Mare of Easttown, the miscasting of PA locales, Bar Etiquette, and a rehash of the movie “Climax”

Music Featured in Episode 97:

 “Plastic” - School Drugs

“ Swamp Ass - Egg Drop Soup”

“It’s Time for Rivelution” and “Finally There” – The Van Dammes

“Use Me” (Bill Withers Cover) – Holly Golightly

We also talk about Movie Club and Juliana Hatfield

Episode 96 - Uncool World

Episode 96 Notes:

A bit of explanation:  I was originally planning to hold this one and post another podcast that was a bit more time sensitive.  Things got nuts so I’m putting up this one.  The description is bare bones, but it tastes line nanna’s sweet apple pie!

Songs featured in Episode 96

“Cold Smoke” – LaGoon

“Missing Link” - Mesh

“Perfect” – Mannequin Pussy

“Daddy’s Home” and “Down” - St Vincent

King Azaz was also discussed, but not featured

Episode 94 - Plaid Girl Winter

No Lie…the twin punch of “White Boy Summer” and my cat‘s glare kind of put us off out games.  As a result we become bizarrely fixated on the name of Daniel Day Kim’s medical drama (The Good Doctor).  The Puppet Master, La Luz, and Garbage are also discussed.

Songs Featured in Episode 94”

Gratitude (Beastie Boys Cover) – Buggin’

“Freedom Dreams” – MOVE

“Train Sounds” and “Eat Your Soul” – The Ragshakers

“Stare into the Sun” – Shine

Mary Bell was also discussed, but not featured (because I still haven’t gotten my album)

Episode 91 - Champu

Episode 91 notes:

In which we discuss Brian, literature, and the secret life of the American shampoo bottle…

Songs featured in Episode 91:

Dirty Robot – Arling and Cameron

“Home Wrecked” – Torso

“Weeds” – Cruel Hands

“Russian Winter” and “Crossbow” – Tamar Aphek

Also discussed – Ragshakers, Miss Lava and NOFX

The story I mention is “Elegy for Andy Gibb” by by Danielle Willis

Episode 90 - A Bish Called Wanda

Episode 90 Notes:

Conspiracy theories, High Fashion, and a certain Mauve Wiccan.  The description is short but the content is hearty, like a beef stew!

Songs Featured in Episode 90:

 “Poison Ruin” - Carrion

“This is Not the Indy Rock I Signed Up For” and “Earthquake” – Girl Friday

“Secret Canine Agent” – Viagra Boys

Dungeonweed was discussed, but not featured.
