Episode 129 - A Bad One

Ok.  Sometimes a podcast lingers too long, and you just need to get it out there and over with.  I meant to put this out about a month ago, but got waylaid by a work trip, disease, and a weeklong internet outage (all of the above to be discussed in Eppy 131).  Podcast Constipation…..

On the other hand, I butcher the Hungarian language and give my impressions of Cats (the musical the movie) and why it is so much worse that I could have ever imaged.

No music featured in this one, but we discuss KIÉGETT FÖLD, Cosmic Joke, and Gaupa

The next one will be better, I promise

Episode 124 - The Almost Lost Episode

Originally recorded on 8/19, we had to shift some things around to try to hit a release date for a review.  This didn’t quite work out for reasons that will become evident in the next episode (125), but we are here now.

And it’s a shame, because we never had a chance to talk about the (very excellent) QOTSA show:

Ginger Elvis and the Man Upstairs

Also, Samantha Fox, a Gwar Ted Talk, Johnny Football, and some twin PP drama.  What are the twin PPs?  Listen and find out!

Episode 123 - Ballad of the Time Travelling Podcasters

Episode 123 Notes

But really, it’s Episode 124.  We talk about MUSIC.  A shocking amount of music, but also moon time, time travel, Jaime’s newfound fandom of both a Ke$ha and a Tay-Tay, and a topic! (Song of the summer).

Music discussed includes Die Sexual, Paint it Black, Be Your Own Pet, A Giant Dog, Speedy Ortiz and Sonic Youth.

We get into a big discussion on Skating Polly (Chaos County Line) and obsession.  The FLOOD article we reference is linked below.  Give it a read.

https://floodmagazine.com/136306/skating-polly-chaos-county-line-track-by-track/

Even more exciting, we had a preview from Jacket Thief, the new solo project from Fu Manchu drummer Scott Reed.  The album is “Lights Out on the Shore” and it came out on September 29th of TripKey Records.

Songs featured in Episode 123

"Bound, I Rise" - Die Sexual

Songs featured in Episode 121:

“Devil’s Pool” – Beach House

Episode 118 - Mind Tummy

Episode 118 Notes:

A pant-load of stories, plus a summary of the Tennessee Williams super plot, Veruca Salt, the concept of a “Mind Tummy”, Judy Bloom, and other such nonsense.

We hint at a new topic (TSS Play List).  If you have a song, send it to us and We’ll add it.  This will get pushed in the next few.

Music featured in Episode 118:

 “Psychic Dance Routine” – Scowl

“Hail Mary” – Skating Polly

We also talk about The new Shana Cleveland album (Manzanita….it’s great) the first new Speedy Ortiz song in 5 years, and tease Boygenius (which causes Jaime to go a bit nuts).

Episode 116 - Insta-Comment

Episode 116 Notes:

So much time has passed since the last one, and I think we finally might be past the “crazy” energy of the last few podcasts.

Jaime reports on Sara Silverman, and Lou talks about his Instagram comment hobby and an unsatisfactory story arc regarding recent concerts.

Musically, we talk about “Good Bison”, “Movie Club” and “The Arrivals”

Songs Featured in Episode 116:

“Bottle Song” – The Arrivals

No clips for “Good Bison” or “Movie Club”, but links below for those inclined to listen

Episode 115 - Book Report

Episode 115 Notes:

We dive into the perils of Wine Drinking, Liz Phair, why Lou doesn’t go to later shows, and Jaime’s hat. For reference, this totally salacious piece of apparel is below:

We also write some primo fan fiction on the spot about an electric rat and our most “thirst trappy” president.  The thought of it still makes me feel a little sick to the tum-tum

Music-wise, we cover Wipes, Manuela Iwansson, Pleasure Venom, and Chinese Black Metal Band Hoplite (or “Ὁπλίτης).  This one can be a bit hard to find, but check them out below:

Songs featured in Episode 115:

“Frogger” - Wipes

“Boys of Summer” - Manuela Iwansson

Hoplite and Pleasure Venom were discussed and not actually featured.  Pleasure Venom kind of fell victim to me buying the vinyl and not having a download code and me being too cheap to buy the same album twice.  Check them out here:

Also discussed, but not featured are BoyGenius the Screaming Females (album out now), the Worriers, and Shana Cleveland

Episode 109 - And a Half

Episode 109 notes

This was supposed to be our pre-vacation podcast.  A spoiler for future episodes (I was too sick to go, which is also why this one is so dated).  In this one, Lou tells the “Toledo Story”, Fellini, “Crimes of the Future”, and Anne Hathaway

The film I mention (Toby Dammit) was part of a horror anthology called “Spirits of the Dead”.  Basic plot is a washed-up actor (as played by Terence Stamp) drives real fast in a car real fast.  Possibly Toby sold his soul for one last chance at fame?  I dunno.  I saw this in a Philosophy and Film class many years ago, and it probably merits a rewatch.  Roger Vadim and Louis Malle direct the other two segments.

Songs featured in Episode 109:

“I Think I Know You” -Weird Nightmare

“Can You Feel It?” The 420 Four

“Make Manager” – Broken Baby

“Oh, To Be” - Claude

“Hollywood Junkyard” – The Bobby Lees

Regulate nad King Mike Entertainment System were discussed but not featured

Episode 106 - Remote

Episode 106 Notes:

Just as we were about to record our next podcast, Jaime got Covid and we had to switch to a remote.  Thus, the audio is a little icky because I had some issues setting up the remote.

Songs featured in Episode 106:

“Searching for You” - Weird Nightmare

“Reality” – Claude

“Big Time” – Angel Olson

We also touch on Gwar, Egg Drop Soup, and Maya Hawke

Minisode 1 - Endless Afternoon

Minisode 1 Notes

This is a quick review of “Endless Afternoon”, the new 7” by La Luz, and a quick impression of the upcoming Paranoyds album (Talk Talk Talk)

Episode 102 - Picture the Scene

Episode 102 Notes:

 Picture the scene…

Among other things, we get into the topic (first horror movie) and a little too deep into D.E.B.S. nostalgia.

Songs featured in Episode 102

“Argument” – Robots in Disguise

“Life is a Voyage” – NOBRO

“In April” – ANXIOUS

“Another Go Around” and “Masquerade” – Beach House

“u_u2” – Black Dresses

Note:  it’s pretty hard to capture Black Dresses in a 30 second blip.  Do yourself a favor and check them out at blackdresses.bandcamp.com

Episode 99.5 - Redo

Episode 99.5 Notes

One might say numbering an episode as a fraction is a way of stalling out our 100th episode.  Others may say that Episode 100 passed us several months ago.  One thing is for sure, this podcast signifies the first time we actually had to junk and re-record an episode.   Short version is that we recorded an episode using new equipment and audio quality was so muddled that we had to scrap it.  Either that, or Jaime is a ghost.  Anyway, we have a do-over and here it is!

Songs featured in Episode 99.5

“Death (XIII)” and “Hellscape” – Julia Shapiro

“Big Disappointment” – Militarie Gun

“The Pines” – La Luz

“Down the Street” – La Luz and Adrian Younge

“Big Star” and “Youth Group Therapy” - Surfbort

Episode 99 - Old News

Episode 99 Notes:

Just to illustrate where we are in the “canon”, this podcast was recorded on August 15th.  Significantly, this would be the last podcast recorded in the apartment and the first “post kitty”.  Thus, pretty much everything we discuss is dated.  Evergreen, however, is a history lesson on the Death Valley Girls, and a guide to vocal warmups.

Music Featured in Episode 99:

“Kittycat Girl” – The Allovers

“Colossus” – Quicksand

“No Reason” – Death Valley Girls

“Latinx” – Raw Brigade

We also talk about (but don’t feature) Evoflo

Episode 97 - The Shape of Lunch

Episode 97 Notes:

This was (A) supposed to come out at the beginning of July and (B) actually 98.  We had some artists (Movie Club, The Van Dammes) we wanted to bring foreword a bit sooner rather than later, but a combination of technical issues and “life” derailed us.  Anyway, we also touch on Football (the European Kind), Mare of Easttown, the miscasting of PA locales, Bar Etiquette, and a rehash of the movie “Climax”

Music Featured in Episode 97:

 “Plastic” - School Drugs

“ Swamp Ass - Egg Drop Soup”

“It’s Time for Rivelution” and “Finally There” – The Van Dammes

“Use Me” (Bill Withers Cover) – Holly Golightly

We also talk about Movie Club and Juliana Hatfield

Episode 88 - I Don't Like It...

Episode 88 Notes

Kidney stone pt deux, and the miseducation of Jaime Z.

Songs featured in Episode 88:

“Nestle in My Boobies” - The Coathangers

 “2K” - Soulglo

 “Care” - Hannah Lou Clark

“The First Murder on Mars” – The Electric Mud

Not featured - Jessica Lea Mayfield and the New Ruffians

Episode 75 - A Fiona a Day

Episode 75 Notes:

The SECOND of our skypecasts (which we are posting first.)   We discuss cat based dining, sponge metaphors, the secret instagram lives of rock stars, and how everyone has put out an EP.  We ask “What are you listening to during the current drama”, and talk about our usual nonsense.   Apologies about the poor audio quality

Songs Featured in Episode 75:

“Bad Cold” – Bitter Branches

“Around Every Corner” – NIN

“Scavengers of Luv” – Dboy

“Shameika” – Fiona Apple

Discussed, but not featured  – Brigid Dawson
